Common basketball rotations worked out
These are the splits for some of the squad sizes that come up most often. Your own numbers go in the calculator above.
| Squad | On at once | Game length | Time on | Time on bench |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 players | 5 | 40 min | 20 min | 20 min |
| 8 players | 5 | 32 min | 20 min | 12 min |
| 12 players | 5 | 40 min | 16m 40s | 23m 20s |
| 9 players | 5 | 36 min | 20 min | 16 min |
Basketball formats and squad sizes
| Format | Typical game length | Typical squad |
|---|---|---|
| Half court junior | 2 x 15 min halves | 6-8 |
| Domestic junior | 4 x 8 min quarters | 8-10 |
| Representative | 4 x 10 min quarters | 10-12 |
| Senior domestic | 4 x 12 min quarters | 10-12 |
Game lengths vary between associations and age groups, so treat these as a starting point and use your own competition's numbers.
How rotations work in junior basketball
Substitutions happen at a dead ball, so you have more natural break points than in a running clock sport. The usual pattern is to rotate at the halfway mark of each quarter, which gives you eight blocks across a four quarter game.
With 10 players and 5 on the court, eight blocks divides perfectly: each player plays four and sits four. Squad sizes that don't divide evenly are where it gets messy, and that's exactly what the calculator sorts out.
A squad of 9 with 5 on court and 40 minutes gives each player about 22 minutes on and 18 off. Nobody can do that in their head at 8am on a Saturday, which is the whole reason this tool exists.
Questions coaches ask
How do I calculate basketball playing time for 10 players?
With 5 on the court and 10 players, every player gets exactly half the game. In a 4 x 10 minute game that's 20 minutes each. The calculator handles the awkward squad sizes like 9, 11 and 13 where the split isn't obvious.
What is a good basketball rotation for 8 players?
With 8 players and 5 on court, each player is on for 62.5% of the game. Rotating three players at each quarter break works well and keeps the changes simple to manage from the bench.
How many times should I rotate players per quarter?
Once per quarter is the minimum for fairness; twice per quarter is common in domestic junior basketball. Set the number of rotations in the calculator and compare how the minutes fall out.
Can I print a basketball rotation chart?
Yes. Enter your player names and print the result. You get a named substitution chart for the whole game, free, with no signup.
