Common soccer rotations worked out
These are the splits for some of the squad sizes that come up most often. Your own numbers go in the calculator above.
| Squad | On at once | Game length | Time on | Time on bench |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11 players | 7 | 50 min | 31m 49s | 18m 11s |
| 12 players | 9 | 60 min | 45 min | 15 min |
| 14 players | 11 | 70 min | 55 min | 15 min |
| 10 players | 7 | 50 min | 35 min | 15 min |
Soccer formats and squad sizes
| Format | Typical game length | Typical squad |
|---|---|---|
| 4v4 | 20 min halves | 6-8 |
| 7v7 | 20-25 min halves | 9-11 |
| 9v9 | 25-30 min halves | 11-14 |
| 11v11 | 30-35 min halves | 14-18 |
Game lengths vary between associations and age groups, so treat these as a starting point and use your own competition's numbers.
How substitutions work in junior soccer
Most junior competitions allow unlimited interchange, usually at a stoppage, a throw-in or the half. Because you are not capped on the number of subs, the constraint is not how many changes you can make, it's how many you can actually keep track of.
The practical trick is to sub in blocks rather than one player at a time. If you have 11 players and 7 on the field, that's 4 off at any moment. Rotating all 4 together at fixed intervals is far easier to manage than staggering them, and the maths stays clean.
Small sided formats are where equal time matters most. In 7v7 with a squad of 11, each player sits out roughly 36% of the game. Parents notice that difference, so having the plan written down before kick off saves a lot of sideline conversations.
Questions coaches ask
How do I work out equal playing time in soccer?
Multiply the game length by the number of players on the field, then divide by your squad size. With 60 minutes, 9 on the field and 12 players, that's 60 x 9 / 12, so 45 minutes each on the field and 15 on the bench.
How often should I substitute in junior soccer?
Two to four rotations per half is the usual range. Fewer than that and players sit for long stretches; more than that and you spend the whole game managing subs instead of coaching. The calculator lets you set how many times each player comes off, so you can try a few options.
Does this work for 7v7 and 9v9?
Yes. Set players on the field to 7 or 9 and the squad size to whatever you have, and it handles the rest. It works for 4v4 and 11v11 too.
Can I print the soccer rotation sheet?
Yes. Add your player names, hit calculate, then print the page. You get a named rotation you can take to the sideline. There is no signup and nothing to install.
